In the development of automotive components operating under cyclic loading conditions a prediction of lifetime is an important issue. Since many of those components are exposed to high-cyclic fatigue it is obvious that the infinite lifetime concept should be used in the design of such components. This means that components are designed to keep the stress state during imposed cyclic loading below the endurance limit curve, so called S-N or Wöhler's curve . If the component is loaded below this limit then no initiation of fatigue cracking with possible subsequent fatigue failures is expected, regardless of the number of loading cycles.
Several fatigue criteria were developed for the fatigue endurance estimation of dynamically loaded components, however, the most commonly used one in the automotive industry is the Dang Van fatigue criterion, which is used in FatigueDV Plug-in for CATIA. The advantage of this criterion is in its ability to estimate infinite lifetime endurance for components subjected to arbitrary cyclic loading, here included also time dependent multi-axial stress states.
FatigueDV Plug-in for CATIA enables an engineer:
- to estimate fatigue endurance of a dynamically loaded numerical model - model in the frame of the finite elements modeling with respect to the Dang Van fatigue analysis
- to gain required fatigue material data for new materials by performing material experiments using standard material testing equipment
- to asses the quality of the results thus obtained and, consequently
- to make the necessary changes to the model (product/part undergoing fatigue damage) in order to enhance the product/part using parametric and/or modification analyses using either custom or commercial finite element software or even using specialized optimization approaches by extending/using the program with other state-of-the-art software tools
