Opening of the 3DEXPERIENCE Laboratory at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade, Thursday 17.10.2019.

The imperative of the time we live in is innovation, and it is our ambition is to make this laboratory one of the places where practice will follow theory. Intellectual capital needs to be embedded in a product,  that is the future. By creating partnerships with companies in this field, we want to increase the value of creativity and intellectual capital and to develop new methods and products, said Radivoje Mitrovic, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, at the opening of the laboratory.

This laboratory allows the students and their teachers to test ideas and concepts for industrial products in virtual reality so that they can gain an insight into the entire lifecycle of a product through a singe platform  - from idea and design, through simulation and testing, production and market launch to recycling. The platform connects creators, engineers, designers, managers, marketing professionals, vendors ... in an integrated environment which represents one of the most modern software solutions and it also enables joint work of experts of different profiles from all over the world at the same time.

“We want to transform our economy into a knowledge-based economy and our GDP into a GDP with exponential growth. The doors of our faculty are always open for such innovative events," said Mitrovic, adding that as of this year students at the Belgrade Faculty of Mechanical Engineering can also study Information Technology in Mechanical Engineering.

This laboratory is the result of the cooperation between the company CAMCAD Data from Belgrade which donated the licences for equipping the laboratory for product development and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade. This will provide the opportunity for both undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and professors to use the first laboratory of this kind in Belgrade.

Dragana Kecic, Director at CADCAM Data, said that the company has a long standing cooperation with the academic community through projects with faculties of mechanical engineering and other related faculties in Serbia. “Education is becoming more complex, it requires the use of modern software tools, but also cooperation with others. There is a considerable need for resources, which is why we started working with your faculty. We hope that you will help our economy and our companies to become more competitive in the global market and that you will remain in Serbia and make successful careers here,” she said.

Caesar Sanchez Lopes, vice president at Airbus, said that innovation is extremely important to this company and that their current focus is on the application of innovation and theoretical knowledge. "That's why people and knowledge are important to us. It is people who make the difference, their passion, their knowledge, their commitment,” he said.

Matteo Cocco, Dassault Systèmes, said his company has been working on numerous software solutions in various industries. From idea to product, you face many challenges related to information and potential solutions. You invest a lot of time if you go one way, and no one guarantees you will succeed, he said.

"That's why we use software that enables the user to simulate different situations, combining information, ideas. We created software that combines different approaches, in real-time, people from different parts of the world, managers, engineers, different formats and approaches, all of them working on the same product, creating, making changes, collaborating, validating. We have a platform that brings them all together and provides the opportunity for feedback. All of this puts us in a situation where we can gain some experience about a product that has not yet been created in reality,” Cocco said.

Our software, for example, gives students the opportunity to work on the same project, on the 'same piece of paper', in real-time, while they are scattered around the same city, the same country or continent, or anywhere in the world, he said.

Cedomir Duboka, Key Client Director at CADCAM Data, said that this is a platform that integrates people of different professions into a collaborative environment where they work with the same purpose and unified database of updated data.

The platform is designed for a variety of industries, from aerospace to automotive, currently, there are 11 different areas. Students and professors can have classes in a virtual environment, they can test some ideas or measurements in practice and simulate solutions. The idea is to give students a chance to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge within this software solution, which they can later apply in professional work and training, he said.

“This provides continuity from a sketch on the napkin to the final product. Traceability and control are important, and now you can play around with the idea of 'what would happen if ...”  because you can test a 3D model and simulate a situation,” Duboka said.

At the end of the event, Andrija Ekmedzic, director and head of project organization in Konelek, Mladen Klickovic, a third year student of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the leader of the BEOAVIA team, and Petar Vojinovic, founder and editor-in-chief of the Tango Six regional aviation portal, addressed the gathering to share their work experience and gave support to the project and the students.
