Great successes of young engineers at the Formula Student competition

The primary goal of a prestigious international engineering competition of students of mechanical and electrical engineering a well as students of a technical profession, commonly known as Formula Student, is to design, construct and produce a single-seated car. Every year, a number of competitions are held all over the world under the auspices of manufacturers from the automotive industry, and technical judges and the whole staff are top engineers from auto industry and auto motor sport.

The competition consists of 3 parts: the technical inspection, a static part, and a dynamic part. It is necessary to take care of the computer simulation of the suction and exhaust system, engine electronics testing and tuning, driving dynamics and suspension mechanisms, numerous structural analysis of chassis, suspension and propulsion. It is also necessary to take care of the development of electronic systems, such as automated sequential gearbox, suction system, drive wheel rotation control system and ignition electronics.

The aim of the competition Formula Student is to provide professional development of students through practical work and application of acquired knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering, electronics, programming, and production technology, the development of new materials as well as the linking of higher education institutions with the real sector.

Students from Croatian, Slovenian and Serbian faculties have won numerous awards and prizes and successfully competed with students from other prestigious faculties in competitions held during the first eight months of 2017th in Netherlands, Hungary and on the prestigious Silverstone track in England.Student teams: The FSB Racing Team, the FESB Racing Team, the RITEH Racing Team, the Superior Engineering, the UNI Maribor Grand Prix Engineering and the Zastava have achieved excellent results in various parts of the competition; Combustion class, overall ICE ranking, acceleration races, design, overall result, technical solutions, award for the best engine, endurance racing and recognition for engineering approach and ambition.

Engineering approach to the knowledge

The competition Formula Student consists of multiple disciplines, where teams have the task of independently developing, constructing, assembling and designing vehicles, as well as making numerous safety tests.
In addition to the areas that involve the direct integration of engineering knowledge into a vehicle, competition sets high demands on finance, management, and marketing in order to ensure project self-sustainability and future development.

For the realization of the idea and attainment of proper performances of a single-seated car, an inevitable part of the project is a software for designing and creating a virtual prototype, in sense of the 3D model.

At the competition that was held in Hungary from 17th to 20th of August, the student team Zastava was the only team, by judging the jury, that had an engineering approach to the knowledge.

Complete development of the 3D model of student vehicle Zastava 2017 is realized within the CATIA V5R21. Through education and cooperation with the member of the CADCAM Group from Belgrade, the students further expanded their knowledge of the modules that were essential for the development and analysis of the proposed solutions.

Part Design, Assembly Design, and Drafting modules were used for designing mechanical elements and assemblies such as the chassis of the vehicle, shafts and gear units. For the development of parts of a more complex geometry and complex surfaces were used Generative Shape Design, Free Style, Wireframe and Surface Design modules. These models were used for constructing and testing aero packages, exhaust/intake branches. Models, on the basis of which are carried out experimental tests that directly affect the performance of the engine, and therefore the performance of the vehicle, are of utmost importance for the placement of the vehicle in the competition.

Weld Design and Generative Sheet Metal Design modules have been intensively used to show welded joints and developed condition of pipes and metal sheets. The DMU Kinematics module was used to check the functionality of assembly, while the field of engineering safety was covered by the Generative Structural Analysis module. The area of structural analysis and finite element methodology represents a particularly interesting area for further development and improvement of students.

Using the previously mentioned CAD tools, the knowledge necessary for monitoring the progress of modern industry is successfully integrated and applied. Close collaboration between the academic community and the real sector is the basis for further development of the industry.
